Miscarriages can be one of the most traumatic events in a couple’s life. A happy mother and father are planning for the new member of the family when tragedy strikes. It’s heartbreaking for believing and unbelieving families alike, we all acknowledge that life was lost, and a tragedy occurred. Yet, millions of people in our nation celebrate the “choice” to end their child’s life. This contradiction never ceases to amaze me.
As Christians, we understand that every human is made in the image of God (Gen. 1:27, ESV). As such, all life has value and must be protected. However, our society has lost its way—it has forgotten that life starts in a mother’s womb—not after birth. Scripture is clear that life begins in the womb. It tells us that God “formed” us and “knitted [us] together in [our] mother’s womb” and that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Ps 139:13–14). Passages of Scripture make clear that we should understand an unborn child is a “person” from the moment of conception! Due to this, we must give the unborn child equal legal protection as others in society.
However, our nation is heading in the opposite direction. Recently, the House of Representatives passed a budget bill that would rescind the Hyde amendment and provide federal funding for abortions. This is an unprecedented move, as Hyde has been included in every budget for nearly five decades. In addition to the House’s budget, Judicial Watch discovered a disturbing (putting it lightly) line of funding from the National Institute of Health through a FOIA request. The documents Judicial Watch received discovered the NIH awarded a “$3.2 million grant to the University of Pittsburgh so researchers could procure and bank fetal organs taken from intact, sometimes full-term fetuses expelled during elective abortions.” The quick facts include:
- When Pittsburgh applied for the funds, they promised to obtain “very high-quality tissue and biological specimens” from babies for its “tissue hub and collection site.”
- CMP says this included harvesting organs from babies that were born alive amid an elective abortion.
- Black and other minority babies were over-represented in the freakish experiments.
The full, disturbing report from Liberty University’s Standing for Freedom Center goes into detail and provides links to the FOIA documents.
If we are going to defeat abortion, we are going to need to teach our children the value of unborn life and God’s design for sexuality and marriage, but it is an uphill battle in our culture. This is no doubt seen in a recent Teen Vogue interview with Senator Warren (D. Mass.). In her interview, the Senator stated, “Both voting and access to abortion are basic. They’re about the functioning of our democracy and about the protection of personal autonomy.” How did we get to the point in society where a sitting U.S. Senator was advocating for the murder of unborn life…to our children in a teen magazine?
Brothers and sisters, we have work to do. These evils are not new or unique to our time (Jer. 7:31; 32:35), but the scale at which we are killing our own children is unconscionable. If you are interested in being involved with ending abortion, I would suggest heading over to the 40 Days for Life webpage. They have a number of resources to get involved and offer support for those that have been impacted by abortion. If you are in the abortion industry and are looking for a way out, or need mental health support, go to And Then There Were None.
